Fish Folks,

The ice sheet at Mundo Lake has receded approximately 5 feet from shore, that usually means open water season is around the corner. Of course it is still obviously winter here with about a foot of snow falling lasting night and this morning.

So there is not enough ice to ice fish, and to much ice to open water fish. It is a bummer for those who have a serious case of cabin fever, but really good news for the quantity of water in our lakes. Obviously the more snow, the better chances of run off helping bring water into the lakes... For obvious reasons there are no up to date fishing reports...

Hope all is well,

Fish Folks,

The weekend put a hurting on the ice sheet at Mundo, unseasonably warm temperatures and rain all day Saturday softened what is left of the ice sheet into what I would describe as a "snow cone" consistency. There is also some run off coming in, putting water under and over the sheet which is softening the edges where it is entering the lake significantly. At this time the lake is NOT SAFE for fishing!

We are getting snow today which is great for a possible spring run off into the lakes, hopefully we can recover some storage volume in the recreational lakes this year. I do not want to jinx it so that's all I'm going to say about the possibility.

This week was unseasonably warm and one day rain, causing the ice sheet to deteriorate at a rapid rate. Currently there is 6" of standing water on the ice sheet and it is not safe for fishing. It's t-shirt weather outside today so I would suspect the sheet is going to continue to erode until we see colder day time temperatures.

I'll update the ice information again on Monday.

Enjoy the weekend,

Received a few reports from the weekend, most mentioned ice thickness between 6"-9" with crusty snow and some slush.

Fishing for one angler was very good for catfish, bluegill with some nice 8" plus bluegill and even a few trout for the complete Mundo Slam. Mr. Lee submitted some of the photographic evidence to jicarillafishqs@gmail.com over the weekend and are presented below. If that is not motivation I don't know what is. He said total he caught 31 catfish, 2 trout, and 9 bluegills and also released a few more. The bass through the ice is worthy of a trophy in my opinion (sadly I don't have any to give).

Despite winters weird ways the season keeps going and I personally am very glad folks keep having good days on the hard water.

Hope all is well and GO FISHING, football is over!

I went out early this morning and dug a few test holes. The average ice thickness was 9", as it was early there was no slush yet, but there was about 2" of snow. The ice is fairly "dry" but of good quality in the sites I selected.

If you want to get your ice fix everything is looking good.

Ice measured 7" on Monday with 2" of slush and multiple inches of snow. The weather has been cold at night and fairly mild during the day which is buffered by the snow layer. As always be careful and drill test holes if wandering around the lake.

I just received photos from the Ice Derby and will be posting them to a new file in the photos section of the website later today or tomorrow so be on the look out for those.

An Angler sent me a photo of his catch from Monday and he was quite happy and you can see why!

Be safe/Catch Big Fish!
