This morning was one of those perfect dry fly mornings at Mundo that only come around rarely and never last long. The overcast conditions and a beautiful midge hatch turned the glass smooth corners of the lake into a feeding frenzy. It appeared to be every trout in the lake eating on the surface. This brings about the problem with writing the fishing blog, I never want to say " You should have been here yesterday" so I'll avoid it by saying, you should have been here this morning. I would imagine if the weather pattern holds that these hatches will continue for a little while especially in the mornings before the wind picks up. One other hatch of angler interest is  the Cicadas that this year are thick in most every tree and bush near the lakes, fish have been known to focus on these large bugs when the opportunity strikes...

Sadly for me, the Departments College Intern and myself watched the lake boil for two hours as we replaced log steps on the east and west side of the lake. As a side note the Fish Crew is going to be continuing its infrastructure projects at the recreational areas, we have been working on a camp site at the top of Mundo and will continue later this week with the installation of a new fire pit at the site directly north of the vault toilet.

I did manage to get a fly fishing report from one of our regular anglers and he said that most bugger flies and larger bead heads (with rubber legs) were producing trout 16" and over the last time he was here. He also noted that he only caught one Bluegill.  All of the reports I have received have indicated great consistent fishing, for larger trout. I have not received any reports about other species, and as you all are aware that is pretty common, as most folks are targeting trout. Bait anglers have noted corn, fireballs, and smaller power bait hunks working well.

Get out and fish!

The weather has stabilized a bit, though we have been experiencing high winds off and on, especially in the evening. Fishing from the few reports I have received include many 16-18" Rainbow Trout out of Mundo on every technique that is commonly used except flies. (I have not received a fly only report recently). Spinners and spoons (z-rays) have all been producing well and powerbait below bobbers has been working, though one angler had better luck with one fireball and a few kernels of corn.

No large fish have been reported out of Embom but lots of 8-12" have been inhaling all manner of bait and lures. There are many bigger fish in Embom but with the lake full to the brim they may be harder to reach without a float tube or small boat.

The day time temperatures are warming up, which means summer is around the corner. If you want to come up and fish for big hungry trout I would recommend getting here before the heat of summer hits.

Hope all is well out there, and please submit reports or questions to the Fish Crew at jicarillafishqs@gmail.com or call the office and ask for Jacob at (575)-759-3255. It is the busy season so please leave a message with your phone number so I can call you back ASAP.

The Fish Crew has big plans for camping and recreational construction projects this summer so be on the lookout for improvements at Mundo Lake!

The weather sure has been a mixed bag of rain, wind, hail, and general awesome fishing weather (if you own lots of gore-tex).

Despite the conditions some anglers have been out and about getting some fish here and there. The roads to Mundo and Embom were graded earlier this week but with all the rain today I'm unsure what condition they will be in once it drys out.

Below are some happy angler photos from Mundo this weekend. For those willing to pay their dues the pay off seems to be awesome fishing! You have to take some chances, and if you are like me, go fishing whenever you can, not just when the report is stacked full of big fish catches. Remember the reports only tell you how the fishing was yesterday.

Good Luck At The Lake!

I apologize with the lack of reports, but very few have been submitted. We have also the gearing up for fisheries work season which gets quite hectic. The good news is that Mundo and Embom have both cleared very nicely and have had few anglers present just a couple each day as far as the Fish Crew can tell.

The one report received was that trolling was not producing very well.

The trout catch from Mundo according to those anglers I've talked to has been slow from the bank, but the weather (mostly wind) has kept folks from giving full day efforts. Very few boat anglers have been seen.

It looks good to me as most afternoons have been slightly to completely overcast (despite the wind) and the water temperature is shaping up nicely.

Get out and fish, submit some reports!
